Tea reforms lift smallholder earnings by 15.8%

Reserve pricing, reformed KTDA governance and a crackdown on the auction cartel raised the bonus paid to smallholder tea farmers.

smallholder tea earnings

Tea is grown by more than 600,000 smallholder families, yet the price at the Mombasa auction was being suppressed by a handful of buyers.

  • A reserve price was introduced at the auction so tea could not be dumped below cost.
  • KTDA governance was reformed to return control of factory boards to the farmers who own them.
  • Smallholder farmer earnings rose 15.8%, with record bonus payouts in successive years.

Alongside tea, the leather industry's processing capacity rose 30% and sunflower acreage grew 8.3% as value-addition policy took hold.
